The Globe University Class Action Lawsuit

The class-action lawsuit filed against the former dean of Globe University, Arthur Thurnby, has garnered nationwide attention because it is so unique. Although there have been many similar complaints about academic and other issues with online degree programs in the past, nothing has ever been as sensational as the current complaint.

What makes this class-action lawsuit so unique is that it involves multiple plaintiffs who claim that the former dean discriminated against them on the basis of gender, race and disability when evaluating applicants for admittance into the college.

The details of the lawsuit filed against the former dean is detailed.

For example, one plaintiff, David P. told of how the process of applying for admittance to Globe University was a “nightmarish experience.” Mr. P. said that he was never given the same courtesy treatment that other students were given, such as being offered water to drink or asking if they had any questions that weren’t related to the program.

Other former students said that they were never given the attention they felt they deserve by the former dean. One student said that his admittance into the college was denied after he requested a lower GPA, and another applicant said that his entire GPA was reduced from a 3.5 to 3.2, which is considered too low.

The Globe University Class Action Lawsuit also names Globe University as a defendant, and the lawsuit seeks damages on behalf of the students who were rejected from the college based on their race, gender, and age.

The Globe University Class Action Lawsuit further names Globe University, its Athletic Association, the former President of the university, and three current college officials as defendants.

The suit claims that the former President, Mr. Joseph Sullivan, failed to take reasonable steps to prevent violations of Title IV, and other federal student rights laws, which are examples of “displacement” of students. These violations deprived the plaintiffs of their ability to enroll in another school.

Furthermore, the suit further claims that the Athletic Association and its officials did nothing to stop violations of the Student Rights Act that would have allowed athletes to participate in other schools. For-profit colleges such as Globe University are in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act because they fail to provide a safe working environment for disabled students.
